Overview
A California natural resources agency needed a quick migration solution for existing OC3 microwave links. The fiber portion of the network had been converted to Ethernet but the ten microwave links could not be switched over as easily.
Challenge
- This natural resources agency had a SONET network made up of fiber and microwave links that they needed to update to an Ethernet network.
- The fiber links were quickly converted to Ethernet, but they have five redundant OC3 microwave links that were too costly and complex to switch to Ethernet radios.
- The agency was stuck with a partially migrated network and was looking for a quick solution.
Solution
The rest of the network had Ethernet transport via fiber, but sections A, B, C, D, and E are linked using OC3 radios. The JumboSwitch Ethernet over OC3 Gateway TC3844-5 was simply inserted between the Ethernet fiber and the OC3 radios.
As shown in the drawings below, they dropped in the TC3844-5, then mapped the IP addresses on either end of the link to complete the migration for each link. The OC3 connection acts as a data pipe passing through any data mapped to the Ethernet link and requires no additional set up.
Benefit
- The agency can now replace the OC3 radios on their own timeline and budget. By taking smaller steps, the client has more control over spend and operational risk particularly when time or man power resources are limited.
- Setup and operation are simple and there is minimal interruption to the network. They were able to stand up the trial with less than 5 minutes of setup.
