TC Communications' IEEE 1613 Solution Guide

Overview

TC Communications has solutions that meet the IEEE Standard Environmental and Testing Requirements for Communications Networking Devices Installed in Electric Power Substations.

Our new IEEE 1613 Solution Guide is designed to ensure that when you upgrade your legacy devices to a modern network, you can select equipment that meet your IEEE 1613 requirements.

TC Communications provide IEEE 1613 Teleprotection, SCADA, Phone and Alarm Solutions over Ethernet or T1.

To select the right equipment for you, view our IEEE 1613 Solution Guide below:

IEEE 1613 Solution Guide

Teleprotection

TC Communications' line of JumboSwitch and Mini Channel Bank provide a full range of compatible solutions with all manufacturers for teleprotection relays.

The diagrams below show both C37.94 and serial teleprotection devices. Our low latency allows for full compatibility for all teleprotection applications while our serial devices provide Mirrored bit compatibility.

With our JumboSwitch solution, teleprotection can be integrated with other interfaces and applications and all are IEEE 1613 compatible.

Using the JumboSwitch as shown allows the integration of other interfaces and applications, however the unrivalled flexibility of the TC Communications JumboSwitch allows for a range of systems from standalone point-to-point systems to complex multi-node systems.

The above diagram shows the Ethernet network being provided by fiber connectivity between the nodes, private ethernet, MPLS etc may be used as an alternative.

The Mini Channel Bank solution using T1 connectivity provides a simple plug and play solution

For serial connected Teleprotection relays, the TC Communications JumboSwitch allows for simple connection over private Ethernet. As before the system can range from single point-to-point up to multi-mode.

The serial option is fully compatible with Mirrored Bits®*.

"Mirrored Bits®" is a registered trademark of Schweitzer Engineering Laboratories Inc.

For point-to-point solutions using T1 connectivity, the TC8610 is the choice of many utilities, providing a quick to deploy solution.

SCADA

For SCADA both the JumboSwitch and Mini Channel Bank can be used to connect a wide variety of SCADA applications.

Some typical applications are shown below, both JumboSwitch and Mini Channel Bank. For more information refer to the IEEE 1613 solution guide.

Phone

TC Communications provides a wide variety of phone solutions:

Primary solutions

Hotline (FXS/FXS)

With a hotline, the phone will ring once one end is picked up.

Substation phone extensions

This can be provided point-to-point as show in the above diagram or point-to multi-point.

The diagram above demonstrates how the TC Communication devices may be used to provide phone extensions to a number of substations.

In this application, each substation may be assigned their own PBX extension. Additionally using the internal PBX functionality, users may call directly between substations using short form dialing. For example, dialing 101 for substation 1, etc.

TC Communications' phone solutions are extremely flexible and configurable for a multitude of applications.

Alarm/Dry Contact

Transportation of dry contact and alarms over Ethernet over IP

Simply replace copper lines previously used for this purpose with a modern network. This is typically used for monitoring door alarms, over-temperature alarms, and access gates to name a few applications.

Ethernet

Industrial-grade Ethernet switches designed for the harshest environments with industry-leading ambient temperature performance.

TC Communications JumboSwitch Ethernet switches can be used standalone or as part of a larger multi-interface solution.

Switching ranges of 1G/2.5G/10G are available

The diagram above is the TC3850-1 10G carrier Ethernet switch configured in a ring topology with additional interfaces and nodes.

The TC3850-1 is IEEE 1613 compliant and is 100% solid state (i,e. No fans) with operations specified -20° to +60° C ambient temperature.

The TC3850-1 has space for JumboSwitch interface cards or additional SFP/Ethernet ports and can act as a 10G node to interface other JumboSwitch equipment.

The TC3840-5 2.5G capable management card provides Ethernet switch capability to the JumboSwitch range as well as the capacity to be deployed as part of a 2.5G Ethernet ring.

The TC3840-5 can also be paired with additional SFP or Ethernet cards to expand switching. It may also be deployed with additional JumboSwitch interface cards.
